In this paper 11 species of rodents are described, that have been found in the fossiliferous karst fissure of Alozaina (Malaga, Spain). Three species of Stephanomys (Murinae) are present in this fauna: S. thaleri, S. minor, and the new species S. prietaensis. The latter exhibits a lesser degree of evolution than Stephanomys balcellsi from Valdeganga 7 and Islas Medas. The association of rodents from Alozaina is a new one for the Upper Pliocene in Spain. It indicates that the locality of Alozaina is younger than Moreda 1B and Rambla Seca Ab, and older than Valdeganga 7. |

In a C 14 dated pollen diagram from ”Cienaga del Visitador” (ca 6°8’N; 72°47’ W) in the Colombian Eastern Cordillera the zones Ib + Ic + II (including the Allerød and Bølling interstadials) form one fluctuation in the diagram, as the short cold zone Ic is not reflected. An earlier Late-glacial interstadial is recognized and is called Susacá-interstadial. It probably lasted from about 13900 to 13100 B.P., was colder than the Bølling-interstadial, and is probably reflected in pollen diagrams from other parts of the world. The Holocene part of the diagram shows very high Gramineae-percentages, apparently due to a considerable lowering of the ”tree-line”. The leaf anatomy of the Linaceae complex (Linaceae s.s., Hugoniaceae, Ixonanthaceae, Humiriaceae and Erythroxylaceae) and putative allies ( Ctenolophon, Lepidobotrys, Irvingiaceae) is surveyed, mostly on the basis of original observations (72 specimens, 27 genera), partly from data in the literature. Diversity in stomatal type, midrib and petiole vascularisation, sclerenchyma support, foliar sclereids, mucilage cells, secretory cavities, and cristarque cells provide evidence in favour of a separate family status of the members of the Linaceae complex. Allantospermum and Cyrillopsis are best accommodated in the Ixonanthaceae. Sometimes the question has occurred to me, whether we have any right to speak of a “Jubilee”, whether one’s retirement from office or the attainment of high age is something to be gratulated upon, since these events are usually not exactly welcome to the person involved. The Committee of the International Colonial Exhibition at Amsterdam has been kind enough to send to me a collection of Mammals made by Mr. F. von Feber during his residence in N. Celebes and W. Sumatra. The request was that I should subject the collection to a systematic review I feel sure that this review contains many facts interesting to zoologists, as it embraces certain very rare and partly unknown species and at the same time gives a very good idea of the peculiar Fauna of Celebes. The Mammals have been collected in the neighborhood of Loeboe Basong, Priaman, West-Sumatra, and in the vicinity of Amoerang, North-West-Celebes. |

Although several of Verheijen's own field observations are entirely reliable, other species mentioned by him cannot be regarded as of anything but very doubtful occurrence. Therefore I have considered it useful to compile a list of those birds which are now known from collected specimens. In the earlier days the cataloguing and labeling of type specimens was rather careless, mostly with no mention that they were types. What we now term ’holotypes’ were previously referred to merely as ’types’, and both ’syntypes’ and ’paratypes’ were called ’cotypes’. Several of the original types were obscured in the files by writing them off as synonyms of other (earlier) species names, changing not only the generic, but even the specific names. Exchange of type material was extremely informal and often no record was made of the transfers. I have started to compile a catalogue of the type material in the museum in 1952, shortly after I was put in charge of the fish collections. The part certain lime-secreting marine algae play in the building of coral reefs and in the formation of banks was discussed chiefly at the end of the last and in the beginnig of this century. At that time it was already known that extensive parts of the sublittoral zone of the Arctic sea were covered by a luxuriant growth of Lithothamnion species. This paper records for the first time a rich atrypid brachiopod fauna from the Middle Devonian of the Cantabrian Mountains, Spain. A comparison of the Spanish atrypid fauna with that of Germany reveals a close similarity between the two. Between c. 23 and 8 Ma, western Amazonia was occupied by the vast Pebas long-lived lake/wetland system. The Pebas system had a variety of influences over the evolution of Miocene and modern Amazonian biota; it formed a barrier for the exchange of terrestrial biota, a pathway for the transition of marine biota into freshwater Amazonian environments, and formed the stage of remarkable radiations of endemic molluscs and ostracods. The lithological variation of the Pebas Formation has furthermore enhanced edaphic heterogeneity in western Amazonia, sustaining present-day high terrestrial diversity in the region. |

Spiranthes sinensis (Pers.) Ames, also known under the synonym S. australis (R. Br.) Lindl., is a terrestrial orchid widely spread in Asia, which is rather well known in Western Europe, because it has repeatedly been found growing spontaneously in pots in orchidhouses. In Blumea 6(2): 361 (1950) the plant described as Ophrys lancea Thunb. ex Sw. was considered to be identical with the first and it was thought that the recombination Spiranthes lancea (Thunb. ex Sw.) B. B. S. was necessary.
